Time to Mail, 1st Grade Buddies, and Finding Evidence!

Our letters for our penpals are in the mail! We can't wait to get our first letters in the weeks to come. We are working on finding evidence to support our claim. Our class has been practicing this with Tiger Rising. Now we are creating our own claims for our independent books and including reasons, as well as specific examples from the text to include in the claim. We are also locating two different parts of the story and finding out how the sections are connected.  We are also trying to determine if there is a life lesson appearing. We got a kick out of our classmates twinning. We began student led mindfulness. We used this before testing and throughout the day. Recess fun! We are working on our small moment stories. Penpals, Adding and Subtracting Multi-Digit Numbers, Writing Celebrations, and More!

We worked on solving problems with missing addends. When we were done, we created our own problems for our buddy to solve! We worked with a buddy using estimation to determine reasonable answers  for multi-digit addition and subtraction.  As we explored prepositions, we realized that we can use them to explain when, explain where, and add more details in our sentences. We created T-Charts and used them to support how Sistine or Rob are complex characters  in the book Tiger Rising. We worked on describing how they act differently at school and with each other. As we completed the chart, we worked on trying to find specific sentences from the text to support our answers. We worked with our science group to create our rollercoaster with two hills. In writing, we worked to add secret thoughts and a quirkiness to make our characters unique and complex. We were so lucky to have an author visit Kipling.
